Volkswagen Group reclaimed the title as China's largest automaker by outselling General Motors over the past two months.

In April, the German automaker's brands delivered 295,300 vehicles in China, for a slight gain of 0.1 percent year on year. In the same month, GM's Chinese ventures sold 277,979 vehicles.

For the month, VW's namesake brand sold 216,700 vehicles, down 2 percent. But Audi deliveries rose 9.4 percent to 49,576 vehicles and Skoda sales rose 3.6 percent to 23,800 vehicles.

It was the second consecutive month in which VW out-performed its U.S. rival. In March, VW Group sold 328,000 vehicles in China, while GM delivered 296,939.

In the first four months, the German auto giant also beat GM in China sales, albeit with a narrow margin. It delivered 1.25 million vehicles, up 4.8 percent from a year earlier. Over the same period, GM China deliveries rose 1.7 percent to 1.24 million vehicles.

In the first two months, GM outsold the VW on strong demand for the Buick, Cadillac and Baojun brands. But GM's Chevrolet car models and Wuling minibuses have lost market share.
