Volkswagen AG said its group deliveries in January rose nearly 14 percent year on year to 400,100 vehicles as VW closed the sales gap with rival General Motors.

GM, China's largest foreign automaker, had its sales rise 7.3 percent last month to 421,023 vehicles.

In January, deliveries of VW's Audi luxury brand rose 6 percent, Volkswagen brand sales jumped 15 percent and sales of Skoda, VW's value brand, increased 8.8 percent. Sales results for Porsche and Bentley were unavailable.

To maintain momentum, VW plans to invest 4.4 billion euros (32.6 billion yuan) this year to introduce new models in China.

In 2016, the automaker will unveil a new Volkswagen Touran L multipurpose vehicle, a B8 wagon and a Golf Sportsvan. Over the next three to four years, VW also will add two MPVs and a wagon.
