The parents of a boy who was diagnosed as a HIV carrier after receiving a blood transfusion has appealed against a verdict, demanding more compensation from medical institutions involved in the case, the Beijing Times reported on Wednesday.

Xiao Bao, 7, was injured in a road accident in January, 2014 and received a blood transfusion in a hospital in Zhangjiajie, Hunan province. Later, the boy underwent surgery in other hospitals.

Three months after the transfusion, the HIV antibody was found in the boy's system. And, in July last year, he was diagnosed as an HIV carrier.

The boy's parents filed lawsuits against the three hospitals where the boy was treated, a blood station and a blood products company, seeking 1.15 million yuan ($170,000) in compensation.

Last month, a Zhangjiajie city district court ruled that each of the five defendants must pay 80,000 yuan to the boy's family. The parents of Xiao Bao refused to accept the verdict and lodged the appeal.
